POS Hardware

Retail POS software solutions are many and varied. The most common solution has historically been to put in a standard consumer PC with some peripherals to run a retail POS software package. This has been true from the corner shop through to many multi store chain stores. We believe that this is not the most suitable or best value solution.

Toshiba TEC manufacture and sell POS PCs. They differ from standard consumer PCs in several ways.

The POS PC is designed to run 24 by 7, 365 days a year, and to achieve this, they are designed for this purpose with long lasting components and use Intel mobile M CPU technology. The mobile CPUs are more expensive, but offer far greater value for money as they provide far greater reliability under constant use. Consumer PCs typically use cheaper components, and desktop CPU chips, which use more power and emit more heat. This means more use of their internal fan to keep them cool, which sucks in more dust, hair and grit. This gets into the fan bearings and causes the fan to malfunction, which in turn causes the CPU to overheat and then fail. A home PC switched on for a couple of hours after work can deal with this okay, but a retail store may be open 8, 12, 24 hours and 7 days, and this constant use will lead the consumer PC to early failure.

The POS PC is designed for connectivity to multiple peripheral devices. It has a range of serial and USB ports, including some of these with power to drive the peripherals, including scanner, printer, customer display, EFT pinpad, mag card reader, biometric scanner, and so on. The standard consumer PC doesn't have this kind of powered connection ports, which means that your point of sale area is cluttered with many external power adaptors and power boards, or powered interface port boards are added, and then this can introduce power issues as the original power supply was not necessarily designed for this added power drain.

Toshiba TEC's POS PC's are designed with longevity in mind. This means that the CPUs chosen are those for which long term availability is assured, and parts are held for the product long life and for many years after discontinuance. The POS PC itself is designed to be robust, and for easy serviceability. This is in stark contrast to the average consumer PC which has a very short product life (6 months) and parts are unavailable after this.

In summary the difference is that Toshiba TEC design a POS PC as an asset which will give a long, trouble free life ensuring minimal down time, minimal interruption to your business, and minimal total cost of ownership. Consumer PCs are now designed as a consumeable. There is no concern with serviceability or parts availability as the expectation is that they will run for a year or so and then be discarded when they fail.

Integrated Touch POS

If your retail POS software is touch screen capable, then our most popular solutions are the Toshiba "WILLPOS A" series POS terminals. The choice of A10 or A20 will depend on the amount of processing power your POS software uses.

The WILLPOS A10 is a common choice as it represents great value for money. It is a low power consumption POS terminal but still gives excellent performance for the majority of POS applications. It is matched with the TRST-A10 printer which derives its power from the POS terminal, and therefore requires no external messy and space consuming power brick. The 2 line integrated optional customer display and POS cash drawer complete the POS terminal.

If you require more processing power or additional features from the POS, then the WILLPOS A20 is the next step up the range. This will give you everything you have in the WILLPOS A10, as well as a higher spec CPU and chipset which should handle any POS application comfortably. In addition there are several options available with the higher spec unit. These include a RAID (dual hard disk for data security) option, customer facing LCD display for running concurrent advertising to your customers at the point of sale, and integrated speakers if your POS supports these additional multi media features.

Modular Touch or Keyboard POS

If your preference is to have the main POS PC placed under the counter, we can offer you several choices.

The rugged and ultra reliable Toshiba WILLPOS B20 offers 24/7/365 supermarket grade performance for the store. The WILLPOS B20 is designed for maximum uptime and will give years of trouble free use along with great connectivity options for a range of peripherals. Powered USB and serial ports minimise the need for external adaptors at the point of sale, and allow easy connection of printers,

scanners, EFT pin pads and mag card reading devices. There are also different options for connection of customer displays and LCD screens.

If a higher spec terminal is required, then the Protech BPC range of POS PCs can give you a spec ranging from Intel CeleronM, Dual Core and Core 2 Duo options. All POS PCs feature mobile CPUs. While the mobile CPUs add a little bit to the cost when compared to desktop CPUs, they represent great value in terms of product life. they are designed to use less power and emit less heat, therefore they require less cooling and consequently last longer than their desktop counterparts.
